Green Goodness - the health benefits of spinach

Spinach is the superstar among green leafy vegetables. It is very flexible, you can add it to casseroles, soups, egg dishes, make it into a meal in it's own right, like our Aloo sag, and of course it's a tasty side dish too.


It's also full of nutrients, low in calories and is good for the body in so many ways. From boosting the immune system to helping your heart, it's advantages might surprise you!



Curbs appetite

Studies suggest thylakoid extracts from the plants like spinach may reduce your appetite. This happens because they lower levels of a hunger hormone and raise hormones that make you feel full.


Helps build bones strength

Spinach has calcium, manganese, and vitamin K, which are important for bone strength - it could also help prevent osteoporosis.


Cuts risk of iron deficiency

Spinach is a source of iron, a mineral you need to help red blood cells bring oxygen to different parts of your body. Too little iron can lead to anaemia, which may make you feel dizzy or have difficulty breathing.


Strengthens the immune system

Spinach has vitamins and minerals like vitamin E that support the immune system and keep you safe from viruses and bacteria that cause disease.

Free school meals and BBC's The One Show!

I was having a peek at Jane Plan Trailblazers today (the private Jane Plan facebook support group) and was so inspired by the kindness and generosity of you all.

Jane Planner, Erika Edwards, has been donating the meals she was thinking of swapping up (plus anything lurking at the back of her cupboard which may tempt her to stray) to a local Food Bank. And she's been inspiring others to do the same. So many of you seem to be supporting this initiative, with members like Angela Elliot, joining in with their own stories of donating to Family Food 4 Free - excitingly this will be featured on BBC One Show on Thursday at 7pm. I'll be watching:) 

It's a tough time for so many people right now, and with half term about to start there's an extra pressure on families. So, inspired by you guys, we're going to join you, and this week we will be donating to our local Food Bank to help families in need.
A big thank you to Jane Planners, Erika and Angela, who have been encouraging us all to do this - and thank you all for being so amazing. We are so grateful to our community of Jane Planners - you really are the best.
