How Food Affects your Mood There's no doubt that the food we eat can affect us, not only physiologically but psychologically as well. Eating a healthy and well - balanced diet can really affect your mood - and with the colder days drawing in, we could all do with a boost. To keep you feeling hea

  • Eating breakfast gets the day off to a fantastic start - try porridge, it is a slow-release energy food which will help maintain your blood sugar levels
  • Try eating regularly throughout the day, but make sure your snacks are healthy. The Jane Plan mixed nuts and seeds are an ideal snack.
  • Avoid foods that make your blood sugar levels rise and fall rapidly, such as sugary drinks, sweets, biscuits, and alcohol.
  • Getting your 5 a day is important  - fruits and vegetables contain the minerals, vitamins, and fibre we need to keep us physically and mentally healthy. Eating a variety of different coloured fruits and vegetables every day means you'll get a fantastic range of nutrients. 
  • Cut down on the caffeine - caffeine is a stimulant, which gives you that quick burst of energy that we occasionally need. But it may also make you feel anxious or depressed. Reducing the amount of caffeine you drink can make you feel noticeably better quite quickly -  so switch to decaffeinated drinks or avoid it altogether.
