Omega 3 - and why you NEED it

Behold the mighty Omega 3, the gift we never knew we needed. It nourishes the whole of your body for the entirety of your life. Without it, we just don’t work quite as well. So, what exactly is Omega 3, and what does it do?

One of our nutritionists Brianna has translated the nutritional information by explaining that Omega 3 is an essential polyunsaturated long chain fatty acid. It’s called essential because we can’t make it on our own. We can turn sunlight into Vitamin D, for example, but the only way to get Omega 3 is to consume it either through our food or as a supplement.

Where can you find it?
Omega 3 is primarily found in fish and seafood, particularly in oily fish like sardines and mackerel. However, when was the last time you sat down to a nice plate of sardines? And how often do your kids eat oily fish? In places like Japan and Iceland, where oily fish is a staple (a bit like bread for us), people are much less prone to illnesses like heart disease.

Reasons to LOVE Omega 3!

  1. BRAIN!
    1. Did you know that a lot of the fat in your brain is composed of Omega 3 – almost 8%! It's called ‘brain food’ for a reason. It’s essential for fast moving brain function and especially beneficial for young’uns during their development. Did your mum ever give you cod liver oil during your exams? It also helps slow age-related memory loss and counters depression – your life hack sorted in a bottle.
  2. BABIES!
    1. Unborn babies are like sponges, they willingly absorb everything you consume, so fill their little growing bodies with goodness! Omega 3 has amazing nutrients for babies’ brains, nervous systems and eyes. Feed it to them before they can tell you they hate the taste.
  3. HEART!
    1. Omega 3 is your heart’s bff, thinning your blood and reducing potential inflammation so that it continues to pump without a pause.
  4. JOINTS!
    1. Never age a day by staying agile and bouncy in your joints. Lots of Omega 3 will prevent the dreaded arthritis by keeping your joints loosy goosy. It also prevents the risk of injury and dislocation! We’re coming for you Rodger Federer.
  5. EYES!
    1. Feel like your eyes are itchy and lost their baby-like glaze? You could be needing a kick of Omega 3. DHA forms a big part of the eye tissue and can keep tear ducts working well. With most of the population staring at a screen of some description for most of the day we believe Omega 3 could be your desk-top buddy from here on out.
  6. SKIN!
    1. Aside from medicinal properties, Omega 3 can become part of your beauty regime too! The fatty acids keep your skin plump, glowing and smooth – all the things your products promise to do! Healing from within is one of the most important lessons to learn about beauty, perhaps take an Omega 3 supplement with two glasses of water in the morning and practically drown your skin in goodness.
