Sneaky Snacks

Are you getting caught out by sneaky snacks disguised as healthy bites?

Most of us break our fast between each meal to grab a snack or two, whether it's at home or on the go. It's one of life's simple pleasures. If you are one of those who can go without a mid morning bite or afternoon indulgence, we salute you.

The fact is, that at home it's much easier to control the calories, fat and sugar content of our snacks, and with the right preparation we can cruise through the day with plenty of healthy options by our side. Unfortunately it gets a little tricky when we're on the go...

Clever packaging assures us of nutritionally balanced bites, which is not always the case when looking at the nutritional information. How dare they?

So, what is the reality of our 'healthy' snacking options? And what are the alternatives?

Sneaky Snacks

Blueberry Superfood Oat Square Bites.
We're lured in by the superfood claim, plus it's just a bit so it must be small? These 'bites' are 138kcal each and very high in saturated fat.
What to go for instead.
Oatcakes with low fat cheese are around 40 kcal per cake, packed with nutritious ingredients and no hidden nasties. Top with a low fat cheese triangle for a satisfying snack to keep you full until your next meal.

Banana Chips.
Simply banana indicates that this snack is healthy, because bananas are. Once baked, the sugar in these crisps soars to over 60g per 100g. Hello sugar spike.
What to go for instead.
The obvious alternative is a piece of fruit, it's easy to grab on the go and the sugar content will be lower. If you're not a huge fan of fresh fruit, go for a low fat yoghurt pot for around 110 kcal and only 7g sugar per 100g.

Sweet Chilli Sunbites.
The wholegrain status lures us in, these are great for our digestion and keep us fuller for longer aren't they? This snack actually falls into the amber category for saturated fat, sugars and salt, with total fats falling into red.
What to go for instead.
Kallo have a range of rice and veggie cakes which are a really convenient option. Their spinach and pesto cakes are only 40 kcal per portion and fall into the green category for fat, sugars and salt. Perfect by itself or with a spread of hummus.
