What even is wellness?
It can seem like a trend, a minefield, and even a bit of an effort to keep up with wellness trends, but it doesn't have to be. Make it work for you, just like I have.
“Wellness is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” – The World Health Organization.
In simple terms, it's just feeling well within yourself and being the best version of yourself. I've tried and failed over the years to keep up the practices and habits which serve my wellness best. Here's what has stuck and why.
My morning routine
I wake up at the same time every day, and get up immeadiately so that I don't lie in bed awake for too long. For me, it springs my brain and body into action and really motivates me to get my day going with my best food forward.
I'll always take 15 minutes in the morning to chat to my other half and read the newspaper. If you can. do the same, even if it's just 5 minutes. We spend far too much time on our phones mindlessly scrolling when we could be finding rewarding social or mental stimulation elsewhere.
Throughout the day
I'm fairly busy during the day and often don't take the time for myself. I'll always try to get out for a walk, whether it's during a team call, in between meetings or just to run around with the dog for 10 minutes. It controls my stress, and of coure time outside is always time well spent.
This is my time to recharge, reset and relax. I always try to make a nourishing meal packed with vegetables and some grilled fish. I find that looking after my body through diet is the most direct pay back, and I go to bed feeling full and ready to take on the next day.
Before bed, I always note down my to do list for the next day and do some quick stretches. This for some reason makes me more relaxed and improves my sleep quality to no end. Find out what relaxes you most in the evenings and use it to your advantage. There's nothing more important than a good nights sleep!
My routine might not work for you, but perhaps it can inspire you to pick up some practices which enrich your day and make you feel happier and healthier. That's wellness after all.
