Workplace Wellness

The workplace can be full of temptation, with after-work pizza, celebratory birthday cakes, and Friday night beers very much the norm for many of us. Considering most of us spend over a third of our lives at work, it's a minefield of temptation! So what can we do to improve how we eat?

Take a Lunch Break
We know it's unhealthy to sit at our desks all day, and we also know it's not good to eat at our desks while working - yet we all still do it. With the average lunch break only 16 minutes long, it's not surprising!  Making a conscious effort to step away from your desk at lunch, even if it's for just a few minutes, will do wonders for your mental clarity, not to mention enable you to eat your lunch more consciously, as opposed to mindlessly munching in front of your screen.
Drink Plenty of Water
It's very tempting to drink coffee throughout the day at work - but try and avoid that trap, and instead, focus on water. Evidence suggests that being hydrated is associated with better cognition and mental performance and helps reduce tiredness. Try drinking six - eight glasses of water every day. At Jane Plan we love our re-usable water bottles - they keep our water nice and cold and are better for the environment too. Click here to find out why it's important to stay hydrated!
 Plan Your Meals
Take a little time out of your weekend to plan and prepare your meals for the week ahead, ensuring they're packed full of goodness! Try lean meat, lentils, and pulses for lunch as protein is especially good at maintaining satiety and combatting afternoon energy slumps. Or, for total ease, have a Jane Plan lunch - it's all done for you. We're loving the Chicken Jambalaya right now.  A choice of office snacks - like nuts & seeds, protein bars or even just some fruit, may boost productivity and happiness at work. Plus, they make everyone feel good.

 Encourage Each Other
If you all try together - it's much more likely to happen! So, try and take a break with your colleagues, go for a walk, grab some lunch. If you're going to get a drink or snack, ask if others want one too! Organise group meetups after work that don't involve eating or drinking to help unwind and have something to look forward to at the end of the day or week. With social support, you are much more likely to reach your goals!
